Everton

Formed: 1878
Nickname: The Blues, The Toffees, The School of Science

UEFA club competition honours
• UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1985

Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets)
• League title: 9 (1987)
• FA Cup: 5 (1995)

History
• Formed in 1878 as St Domingo's FC but renamed after the Everton district of Liverpool, the club were one of 12 founder members of the English Football League in 1888. They have spent all bar four seasons of their history in the élite division and were Premier League founder members in 1992.

• Success came fast as Everton won the first of nine English titles in 1891. The next year they left their Anfield home over a rent dispute, so it was to Goodison Park that they brought the first of five FA Cups in 1906.

• Everton were English champions when Britain entered both World Wars, and in between times the 'School of Science' flourished. Their greatest pupil, legendary striker William Ralph 'Dixie' Dean, inspired the 1928 title triumph with 60 goals – still a top-flight record. Everton regained the crown in 1932 before Dean became the first footballer ever to wear the No9 shirt in the FA Cup final victory of 1933.

• Relegated for a season in 1930, the Toffees endured a three-year exile in the early 1950s. However, another golden era beckoned as the stylish side of the 1960s, managed by Harry Catterick and backed by chairman Sir John Moores, landed two championships and an FA Cup for the 'Mersey Millionaires'.

• With the 1970s notable for near-misses, Everton came again in the 1980s, lifting two English titles, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup under Howard Kendall and assistant Colin Harvey, both stars of the '60s. The post-Heysel European ban heralded a decline resulting in the Blues' worst-ever decade in the 1990s. Yet if 1995 cup glory brought temporary relief, a restoration of fortunes followed manager David Moyes's appointment in 2002.
