History
• Founded as BFC Hertha 1892, the club acquired its current name following a merger with Berliner Sport-Club (BSC) in 1923. They soon began making waves under their new guise by reaching the final of the German championship six years in succession between 1926 and 1931, winning the latter two (5-4 v KSV Holstein and 3-2 v TSV 1860 München).
• A founder member of the Bundesliga in 1963, Hertha battled against relegation in the first two seasons before being demoted at the end of the 1964/65 campaign for breaching German Football Association rules.
• Hertha returned to the top flight three years later, the prelude to one of their most successful periods. Die Alte Dame were Bundesliga runners-up in 1974/75, twice reached the German Cup final (1977, 1979) and only the away goals rule denied them a place in the 1979 UEFA Cup showpiece, FK Crvena Zvezda prevailing at their expense.
• A decline in fortunes led to third-tier football in 1986 before Hertha eventually, albeit briefly, made their way back to the Bundesliga at the beginning of the 1990s. Their stay was short-lived, lasting just a season, and Hertha would not feature among the elite again until promotion in 1997.
• That signalled more success as Hertha won back-to-back German League Cups in 2001 and 2002 and began to make an impression in Europe. In 1999, they advanced to the UEFA Champions League second group stage at the expense of AC Milan and Galatasaray AŞ and went on to enjoy several forays into the UEFA Cup. Under the guidance of Lucien Favre, Hertha came close to winning their first Bundesliga crown when they finished in fourth, six points behind champions VfL Wolfsburg, in 2008/09.
