History
• Formed in the Soviet republic of Dagestan in 1991 by businessman Magomed-Sultan Magomedov and former Dynamo Makhachkala player Aleksandr Markarov, the club excelled on a regional level, becoming Dagestani champions in their first season. Entered the national third tier in 1992 after the restructuring of the league pyramid from a Soviet system to a Russian.

• Earned a top-flight place for the first time in 1999 and surprised many as 12-goal Serbian forward Predrag Randjelović helped them to a fourth-place finish in their debut campaign of 2000 – and UEFA Cup qualification. Failed to navigate their way out of the first round of continental competition, losing 1-0 to Rangers FC.

• Could not maintain the momentum of their maiden Premier-Liga campaign, despite a losing Russian Cup final appearance in June 2001, and suffered relegation in 2002, spending the next seven seasons in the second division.

• Anji's fortunes were revitalised once bought by Suleyman Kerimov in 2011, the new owner investing heavily to bring in big-name signings such as Roberto Carlos, Yuri Khirkov and Samuel Eto'o. Guus Hiddink was appointed coach in February 2012.

• Ended the 2011/12 campaign fifth in the Premier League before securing third place the following season. However, a penalties defeat by PFC CSKA Moskva in the 2013 Russian Cup final denied the club a first major honour.

• Reached the UEFA Europa League round of 16 in 2012/13, Anji's best showing in Europe, but Kerimov subsequently announced that investment would be cut in summer 2013 – prompting the departure of many first-teamers and a drop-off in competitiveness in the Premier League.
