History
• Fulham were admitted into the Football League Second Division in 1907/08 following a second successive Southern League championship. After an inauspicious start, their first campaign was one to remember as Fulham, who also reached the FA Cup semi-finals, fell just three points short of top-flight promotion.

• The Cottagers reached the top tier of English football for the first time in 1949, remaining in the First Division for three seasons. They also reached the FA Cup semi-finals for a third time in 1958 and returned to the top flight at the end of the following campaign, finishing tenth in their first season back among the élite.

• Never finishing higher than mid-table, a Fulham team featuring former England captain Johnny Haynes and George Cohen − a member of the 1966 FIFA World Cup-winning side − remained in the First Division until 1968, when they were relegated with just 27 points.

• After more FA Cup semi-final disappointment in 1962, a side boasting another World Cup winner, Bobby Moore, and Alan Mullery guided the Cottagers to their first showpiece appearance in 1975, losing to London rivals West Ham United FC. The following year George Best signed, scoring on his debut against Bristol Rovers FC. Then came decline, and by January 1996 they were second from bottom in the fourth division – the club's lowest ever league position. Fulham's resurgence coincided with the takeover of the club by Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al Fayed in 1997.

• By 2001 the Cottagers had returned to the top tier, won the UEFA Intertoto Cup a year later by beating Bologna FC in the final, and ended the 2008/09 season in seventh, the highest top-flight finish in their history. Their zenith came the following season as Roy Hodgson's side beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus and Hamburger SV en route to the UEFA Europa League final. Club Atlético de Madrid proved too strong in Hamburg, though it took a 116th-minute goal from Diego Forlán to beat Fulham.
