History
• The Kostanay club was founded in 1967, originally under the name Avtomobilist, meaning car factory worker, but became the more poetic Burevestnik, or petrel, six years later when the playing squad was largely composed of local students.

• Success in winning the amateur league title in Soviet-era Kazakhstan earned the club a place in the second tier of the USSR's national league, but the most dramatic movements of the subsequent years to be name changes; they were Energetik from 1980-89, Kustanayets (people of Kostanay) from 1990-91 and Khimik (chemist) from 1992-94.

• They competed in the first post-independence Kazakhstan leagues under that latter identity, but adopted their current name ahead of the 1995 campaign; Tobol is the name of Kostanay's local river, a 1,500km-long tributary of the Irtysh.

• The new name prompted an upturn in ambition for the club; the signing of the talismanic Nurbol Zhumaskaliyev in 2000 showed their hunger and, after surprisingly finishing third in the 2002 campaign, they finished outside the top three only once in the remainder of that decade.

• Dmitriy Ogai coached Tobol to their first Kazakhstan Cup in 2007 and his side were among the winners in the UEFA Intertoto Cup the same year, but it was Russian Ravil Sabitov who finally marshaled them to their first national league title in 2010.
