History
• CFR were founded as Kolozsvári Vasutas SC – Cluj Railwaymen SC in Hungarian – while Cluj was still part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. When Transylvania was reintegrated into Romania after World War I, they became CFR – Căile Ferate Române – as they became attached to Romania's state rail company.

• The club played in the second and third tier of the Romanian system for much of their history, winning promotion to the top flight under coach Dr Constantin Rădulescu in 1969 and peaking with a fifth-placed finish in 1973. The club's stadium, which now bears Rădulescu's name, was opened that year with a friendly game between CFR and the Cuban national team.

• Relegated back to the second division in 1976, CFR went into decline. However, the then third division side were given new hope with the arrival of local businessman Árpád Pászkány as their main backer in January 2002.

• Pászkány invested heavily and coach Aurel Sunda guided them back to the Divizia A in summer 2004. League finishes improved year on year until Ioan Andone led them to a domestic double in 2008.

• Andone took them into the UEFA Champions League group stage and a second domestic double, completed under Italian Andrea Mandorlini, put them in Europe's top club competition again in 2010/11. Andone then returned in 2012 to help CFR to their third national title.
