A former Yugoslav republic, Slovenia began competing as a separate entity in 1992 and caused a surprise by qualifying for both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup at the second attempt. Led by coach Katanec and galvanised by star forward Zahovič, the team made it to the major tournaments of 2000 and 2002 thanks to play-off victories but did not progress beyond the group stage in either. Since that halcyon period there has been just one further qualification, via another play-off, with Russia defeated en route to an appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where again they were eliminated early.

A UEFA member since 1992, UEFA EURO 2000 was the best of Slovenia's five UEFA European Championship qualifying campaigns to date, the nation making it to the finals following a 3-2 aggregate win against Ukraine in the play-offs. Katanec's side acquitted themselves well in Belgium and the Netherlands, drawing against Yugoslavia and Norway either side of a 2-1 loss to Spain.

That success was almost repeated at the next time of asking when Slovenia finished second in their UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying section, but Croatia proved too strong for Bojan Prašnikar's team in the play-offs, winning 2-1 on aggregate. After those campaigns, UEFA EURO 2008 and UEFA EURO 2012 were comparatively disappointing, Slovenia finishing sixth and fourth in their respective qualifying sections.

Memorable EURO matches
13/06/2000: Yugoslavia 3-3 Slovenia, UEFA EURO 2000 group stage

At one point Slovenia were 3-0 up and a man to the good on their finals debut, but Yugoslavia rallied.

17/11/1999: Ukraine 1-1 Slovenia, UEFA EURO 2000 play-offs
Miran Pavlin's goal in snowy Kyiv completed Slovenia's play-off success, sparking wild celebrations.

07/09/1994: Slovenia 1-1 Italy, EURO '96 qualifying
Katanec's final game as a player marked a bright start for Slovenia in their first EURO campaign.

Did you know?
Slovenia's first international match after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia was a 1-1 friendly draw in 1992 with Estonia, also playing their first game since independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
