The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) began competing on the international stage in 1994 but have yet to finish in the top three in a qualifying group for either the UEFA European Championship or the FIFA World Cup. In fact, fourth place was where they finished in each of their first five qualifying campaigns, one of which produced a record 11-1 win over Liechtenstein. Unfortunately the trend since then has been downward, the 2014 World Cup qualifiers bringing the team's first ever bottom place finish despite home wins against Wales and Serbia and a draw in Scotland.

FYROM's first participation in a competitive tournament as an independent state came with their qualifying bid for EURO '96, starting out with a commendable 1-1 draw against 1992 champions Denmark in Skopje. They have consistently proved tough to beat, earning draws with Croatia and the Republic of Ireland during UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying, and in England and Slovakia four years later.

England were held once again in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008, a campaign which included a 2-0 home victory against eventual quarter-finalists Croatia. UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying started positively, with four points collected in their opening three games, but a run of four straight defeats signalled the end of any qualification chances. FYROM finished fifth in the six-team Group B, their only wins coming against Andorra.

Memorable EURO matches
17/11/2007: FYROM 2-0 Croatia, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying

Goran Maznov and Ilco Naumoski condemned the eventual Group E winners to their only defeat.

17/12/1994: FYROM 3-0 Cyprus, EURO '96 qualifying
Boško Djurovski's hat-trick secured a first competitive victory as an independent state.

07/09/1994: FYROM 1-1 Denmark, EURO '96 qualifying
FYROM's first competitive international ended in a fine draw against the European champions.

Did you know?
Macedonian-born midfielder Dragoslav Sekularac was one of Yugoslavia's key players as they reached the 1960 UEFA European Championship final, losing out to the Soviet Union. He was such a big star in the former Yugoslavia that he starred in a 1962 film, 'Šeki snima, pazi se' (Šeki is filming, watch out!), and inspired a hit song, 'Šeki twist'.
