Friday 14 March 2003

The 2003 Hermann Neuberger awards ceremony was attended by UEFA president Lennart Johansson, who presented the awards at the event in the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken.

Annual awards
The Hermann Neuberger prize was created by the Saarland Region Sports Association (LSVS) and ARAG Sports Insurance and is named after the long-standing former President of the German Football Association (DFB), who was born in the region.

Influential figure
Dr. Neuberger was president of the DFB from 1975 until his death on 27 September 1992, and was also vice-president of FIFA from 1974 until 1992. In his speech Mr Johansson thanked, in the name of the entire European football family, "all those that have continued the lifelong work of Hermann Neuberger and have helped keep his work alive."

Key event
During the award ceremony, LSVS president Gerd Meyer said that the annual ceremony, which rewards Saarland sports teams with fine records in youth and sports developments, is the most important event of the year for the Association.

Deserved winners
This year, the main prize of €7,500 was awarded to the Athletics Department of TV Püttlingen. Hermann Neuberger plaques, along with €4,500, were given to TTV Niederlinxweiler and the Folsterhöhe Judo Club. The Homburg Friends of Cyclism, the Homburg swimming club, the KV Riegelsberg wrestlers and the Saarbrücken chess club each received awards of €1,500 in recognition of their work.
