• A media and information entrepreneur, Giancarlo Abete earned a degree in Economics and Commerce at Rome's Sapienza University and has served as a member of the Italian Parliament (1972-1992), president of the Rome entrepreneurs association (1994-2000) and head of the city's tourist board (1999-2003).

• He started working with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as head of the technical department in 1989, before later appointments as president of Serie C, association vice-president (1996-2000 and 2001-2006) and head of the Italian delegation during the Azzurri's 2006 FIFA World Cup triumph. He was elected FIGC president in April 2007 and was admitted to the UEFA Executive Committee two years later.

• Married with two daughters, Abete said after taking charge of the FIGC: "My aim is to make the advancement of economic interests compatible with the moral and ethical principles of football."
