• A member of the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body from 1992 to 2002, he became chairman of the Football Association in 1999 and joined the UEFA Executive Committee a year later. While he stood down as FA chairman in 2008, he continues to play an important role with the association, where he is senior vice-president, and UEFA.
• A keen reader and classical music fan, Mr Thompson believes football is a powerful force, saying: "It's not just a game; it has enormous impact on the quality of life of many people. No other sport does that in the same way. Used properly, football can make a difference."
