Bulgarian football is in mourning after the death of former PFC CSKA Sofia stalwart Krum Yanev at the age of 83 on Friday evening.

Born in Plovdiv in January 1929, Yanev began his career with local side PFC Botev Plovdiv before joining CSKA Sofia in 1950. The forward went on to form a legendary partnership with fellow Bulgarian great Ivan Kolev at the capital club and helped his side win a total of eight league titles in 1952, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960. Yanev also won the Bulgarian Cup – then known as the Soviet Army Cup – on two occasions, in 1954 and 1955, and ended his career playing for FC Spartak Plovdiv.

On the international stage, Yanev notched four goals in 31 appearances for Bulgaria and was part of the team that won a bronze medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne.
