Bohemians legend dies

Irish soccer is mourning the death of one of its greatest players - former Bohemian FC striker Jackie Jameson.
Irish football is mourning the death of one of its greatest players after former Bohemian FC striker Jackie Jameson died suddenly in Dublin aged 45.

Bohemian rhapsody
The bald Dubliner played for rival clubs Shamrock Rovers FC and Saint Patrick's Athletic FC but made his name with Bohemians from 1981 to 1990. He won no medals or trophies in his time at Dalymount Park and was never capped, but in an internet poll recently he was voted the club's greatest ever player.

Birth of a legend
Jameson's finest hour was in September 1984 when he inspired Bohemians to a shock 3-2 win in Dublin over Scottish side Rangers FC in the UEFA Cup. Although Rangers won the return leg 2-0 at Ibrox, the Jameson legend was born.

Show of respect
He retired from playing when he left Bohemians in 1990 and never returned to the game in any capacity, either in coaching or the media. But the massive turnout at his funeral in Dublin on Thursday showed how highly he was regarded by the fans.

'Magical memories'
Fran Gavin, secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland, said: "A gentle giant, Jackie kept all his emotions and passion for the football pitch. This is were he felt most at home. His untimely passing has shocked the Irish football community, however he has left us with many magical memories."
