UEFA President presents award to Irish fans

UEFA President Michel Platini presented an award to the Republic of Ireland's fans for their exemplary conduct at UEFA EURO 2012 before the friendly against Greece.

UEFA President Michel Platini has presented an award to the Republic of Ireland's supporters for their exemplary behaviour at UEFA EURO 2012 this summer.

Mr Platini travelled to Dublin to make the award ahead of Wednesday's friendly international between the Republic of Ireland and Greece. The award has been dedicated by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and Irish fans to the memory of 21-year-old James Nolan, who tragically lost his life while supporting his country in Poland.

James's father Jimmy, mother Essie, sister Sue, brother Andrew and family members Gareth Dudley and Lee Cullen were present at the Dublin Arena to receive the award from the UEFA President on behalf of the FAI. Spectators at the match and the two teams applauded when the presentation was made.

"I am very touched by this dedication to the memory of James," said Jimmy Nolan. "He followed Ireland since he was knee-high, and represented so much that is good about Irish supporters. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the incredible support that our family has received during recent months. It has meant a lot to all of us."

"I am glad that this award will be accepted by James Nolan's family whose tragic loss left all Irish fans deeply saddened after the EURO," added FAI chief executive John Delaney. "He was a lifelong supporter and all Irish fans are united in wanting this award to be dedicated to his memory."
