UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that Adrian Mutu is ineligible to play for ACF Fiorentina in the UEFA Champions League first knockout round first leg against FC Bayern München on 17 February.
This follows the decision rendered by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on 3 February to extend the ban on the player to have a worldwide effect for the duration of the provisional suspension imposed by the association.
The FIFA decision in turn comes after the player tested positive at a doping control following the match between ACF Fiorentina and AS Bari in Serie A on 10 January. The provisional suspension of the player was made on 29 January by the national anti-doping body of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
It is clear that the length of the UEFA suspension will depend on the final decision of the court and the outcome of any appeal against this decision.
