UEFA has fined Villarreal CF and two of their players, Nilmar and Santiago Cazorla, after the pair picked up bookings late in the Spanish club's UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg against FC Twente.

Striker Nilmar and defender Cazorla both received a yellow card during the closing minutes of Villarreal's 5-1 home victory over the Dutch side on 7 April, which left them suspended for the teams' second-leg encounter a week later. The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body today decided to fine each player €20,000 while also handing down a €60,000 fine to Villarreal. An appeal may be lodged against the verdict within three days of the dispatch of the decision.

Meanwhile, the disciplinary proceedings which had been opened against FC Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta have been dropped. Iniesta had been booked after 59 minutes of his club's UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against FC Shakhtar Donetsk on 6 April – and also incurred a suspension which ruled him out of the second leg of that tie.
