Top referees to meet in Nyon

Europe's leading referees will look back at a successful UEFA EURO 2012 and prepare for the coming season at their annual UEFA summer gathering in Nyon this week.

Europe's leading match officials will travel to Switzerland this week for the latest summer gathering of top UEFA referees.

The meeting, in Geneva and at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, has become a traditional fixture on the UEFA calendar and is aimed at helping referees prepare for the 2012/13 UEFA club and national team competition season.

From Monday to Wednesday, 22 elite, 14 elite development and 55 first-category referees will be given expert instruction and guidance from UEFA Referees Committee members – all themselves experienced former international referees – while chairman of the UEFA Referees Committee, Ángel María Villar Llona, will also be on hand to motivate the officials with his opening presentation.

The agenda contains presentations on the aims, goals and strategies for the new campaign, as well as a review of UEFA EURO 2012 from a refereeing perspective. The discussions will also focus on additional assistant referees, which will continue to be deployed in UEFA club competitions this season.

A busy two days will also feature talks on teamwork between officials, unpopular decisions, free-kick management, offsides and body language. Video analysis will be used, and the referees will split into working groups for some topics and hear feedback in plenary sessions.

In addition, the referees will undertake a fitness test and receive feedback on the results. As trained athletes, top-level international referees must be supremely fit to be able to cope with the demands of modern football.
