Roger Hunt
Date of birth: 20 July 1938
National team: England
Clubs: Liverpool FC, Bolton Wanderers FC
An astounding 285 goals from 489 appearances leaves Hunt ranking high among the legends to have donned the famous all-red Liverpool kit. But Hunt was actually discovered by pure chance when Liverpool scout Bill Jones attended a match in the mid-Cheshire League with the intention of watching a Knutsford FC player, but left with the impression that a striker playing for Stockton Heath FC was worth a look. Jones was not to be disappointed.Hunt signed for Liverpool as a 20-year-old in May 1959 and scored on his debut against Scunthorpe United FC during the 1959/60 season. Liverpool went on to win the English title twice in a four-year spell in which Hunt scored 110 goals, and he scored as they won the 1965 FA Cup.
Unusually unselfish for a striker, Hunt was regarded as a gentleman professional. Besides Liverpool, he also served England well and was a member of their 1966 FIFA World Cup-winning team. Hunt scored three times in six appearances in that tournament and, overall, hit 18 goals in 34 England games, finishing on the losing side only twice.
