The FIFA World Cup takes centre stage for the coming month but by the time the winner is crowned in Johannesburg on 11 July the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League will already be well under way.

The road to Wembley and the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League final begins on 29 June, a mere 38 days after FC Internazionale Milano were crowned kings of Europe after beating FC Bayern München 2-0 in Madrid. The titleholders of the countries ranked 50 to 53 in the UEFA coefficients will contest the two-legged first qualifying round. They will have to come through eight games if they are to make the group stage draw in Monaco on 26 August on the eve of the UEFA Super Cup between Inter and Club Atlético de Madrid.

The make-up of the 12 UEFA Europa League groups will be determined the following day, the competition having kicked off on 1 July. Some 21 matchdays separate those first games and the final at the Dublin Arena on 18 May, when Atlético's successors – the holders themselves enter in the group stage – will be crowned. The UEFA Champions League showpiece takes place across the Irish Sea in London on 28 May, two days after the UEFA Women's Champions League showpiece at an as yet unconfirmed venue elsewhere in the UK capital.
