Homeless World Cup ends

The 2012 Homeless World Cup, of which UEFA is a global partner, has ended in Mexico City, with Chile and Mexico taking the men's and women's titles respectively.

The 2012 Homeless World Cup, backed by UEFA, has been won by Chile, who beat Mexico 8-5 in a thrilling men's final in Mexico City's Plaza de la Constitución.

Consolation for the host country was provided by the Mexican women's team, who defeated Brazil 6-2 in the women's final to bring an end to a tournament watched by thousands of spectators and which proved that football has the power to change lives. Europe's representatives were headed by Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria and Lithuania, who finished fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. The Bosnians took the best new team award, while Austria were worthy winners of the fair play prize.

UEFA is one of the global partners of the competition, in which 59 teams took part between 6 and 14 October. The aim of the 4v4 street soccer event is to fight the exclusion suffered by the homeless and to encourage them to seek better futures, while also drawing attention to the problem of homelessness across the world.

The Homeless World Cup supports grassroots football programmes and social enterprise development via a network of 73 national partners and celebrates its work by organising this annual tournament that unites teams of homeless people from around the globe. As part of its social responsibility activities, UEFA has backed the Homeless World Cup from the beginning, and the event has grown considerably since that first edition in Graz, Austria, in 2003.
