Stewards to counter intolerance at EURO

The stewards who will be on duty at UEFA EURO 2012 are being given special guidance on countering racism and discrimination as part of UEFA's Respect Diversity campaign.

The stewards who will be on duty at UEFA EURO 2012 games in Poland are receiving special instruction on how to counter racism and discrimination at a training session in Warsaw.

Never Again, the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network's partner in Poland, will conduct special sessions as part of the stewards' training at the National Stadium Warsaw, with a view to enforcing a key finals principle, Respect Diversity. The safety officials will get instruction on identifying and eliminating manifestations of intolerance, such as racist symbols, in line with UEFA's anti-discrimination policy at UEFA EURO 2012.

Never Again is delivering similar sessions for youth coaches, sports teachers, law enforcement officers and club officials in a bid to ensure a racism-free final tournament, and raise awareness of the problems of racism and discrimination in football. It is hoped the initiative will create a lasting legacy in the co-host nation. With UEFA's support, Never Again is implementing the Respect Diversity project as a central feature of the Respect campaign at UEFA EURO 2012, which tackles major social issues in Europe. UEFA is investing a total of €3m in the campaign.
