Visitors to the innovative UEFA-supported Only a Game? exhibition at World Museum Liverpool will now be able to experience the fervour of fellow fans in football-mad cities across Europe thanks to free screenings of the fly-on-the-wall film On the Edge of Passion.
Celebrate extension
To celebrate the extension of the exhibition until 26 April, Only a Game? has joined forces with the 2008 Capital of Culture's Cities on the Edge programme to show the documentary. It follows fans of clubs like Liverpool FC, Olympique de Marseille and Galatasaray AŞ, laying bare the highs and lows they experience as they support their favourite team through a season.
'Explore concepts'
"We've teamed up with World Museum Liverpool to screen the film for free, adding a further opportunity to explore some of the concepts that exist in the Only a Game? exhibition," said Ben Potter, co-ordinator of the Cities on the Edge programme for Liverpool Culture Company. "The film celebrates Liverpool's football fandom and explores the city's significant relationship with European football culture, a theme that is of great importance within the exhibition itself."
Love affair
The 52-minute film, which will be shown in the Treasure House Theatre at World Museum Liverpool this week with further screenings in March and April, is another reason to visit the exhibition, which explores Europe's love affair with football over the last 50 years. It aims to provoke visitors to reflect upon the social and cultural impact of modern football, and consider certain aspects of the game, such as racism, integration and solidarity, as well as the emotions it triggers.
Local colour
Only a Game? also houses some of football's most-coveted prizes, and though the UEFA Champions League trophy is no longer on display, fans will be able to see the UEFA Cup until 8 March, with the UEFA European Championship trophy and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup accompanying the exhibition until it closes. The UEFA Futsal Cup, UEFA Women's Cup and UEFA European Under-21 Championship trophy will also be paying a visit, while artefacts and memorabilia from the National Football Museum in Preston recall some of the continent's greatest players and most historic matches. Objects from Liverpool's two pre-eminent clubs, Liverpool and Everton FC, add local colour to the exhibition, which is part of the city's 2008 European Capital of Culture celebrations.
'Specially adapted'
"Only a Game? is making its only UK appearance in Liverpool, and we're extremely pleased to be able to extend the run of this popular exhibition in arguably one of Europe's great capitals of football," said John Millard, executive director of World Museum Liverpool. "Specially adapted for the city, visitors can expect to discover Liverpool's own dramatic role in European football with special items on display from the Everton Collection and the Liverpool FC Museum personalising it for football fans of both teams."
