FC Basel 1893 recorded a 5-1 aggregate victory in their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie against Debreceni VSC.

Basel were already 2-0 ahead after last week's first instalment in Hungary and took 26 minutes to vanquish any hopes of a Debrecen comeback in the return. Çağdaş Atan was the man on the mark, with Scott Chipperfield (59) and Xherdan Shaqiri (64) further salting the visitors' wounds and rendering Adamo Coulibaly's goal 16 minutes from time as scant consolation.

The margin of defeat might have been greater had Chipperfield not passed up a headed chance from five metres with nine minutes on the clock. It mattered not, though, for Çağdaş was right on cue when Benjamin Huggel's header rebounded off the crossbar with 19 minutes of the first half remaining. Jacques Zoua struck the woodwork himself seven minutes later but it was only a matter of time before further damage was forthcoming.

Huggel was again pivotal just before the hour, flicking on a cross for Chipperfield to steal in front of goalkeeper István Verpecz and turn the ball in. Shaqiri added another having flummoxed the Debrecen defence before the Hungarian titleholders found the net through Coulibaly after Franco Costanzo had saved his penalty.
