Boavista hoping for more glory

Four points from their opening two games have made Boavista FC surprise leaders of Group B in the UEFA Champions League, a section that pits them against three winners of European titles, including two former winners of Europe's premier club competition.

Four points from their opening two games have made Boavista FC surprise leaders of Group B in the UEFA Champions League, a section that pits them against three winners of European titles, including two former winners of Europe's premier club competition.

Only side with win
The Portugese side are alone of the four teams in claiming a victory so far and if they could post their second in the competition against Matthias Sammer's BV Borussia Dortmund at the Bessa stadium on Wednesday they would go a long way towards booking a place in the second group stage.

Eight changes
In last week's 3-1 victory over FC Dynamo Kyiv all four goals were scored in the first half-hour with Erwin Sánchez and  striking before the ten-minute mark. At the weekend Boavista then demonstrated the depth to their squad as coach Jaime Pacheco made eight changes to his team for the difficult trip to take on a Gil Vicente FC team that has been one of the
revelations of the current season - and was repaid with a handsome 3-0 victory.

Santos hat-trick
Brazilian striker Márcio Santos hit all three goals to keep Boavista ahead of their city rivals FC Porto at the top of the league. They have 15 points from six games. Santos is the club's leading scorer even though the player signed from Galatasaray SK (where he was understudy to Mario Jardel) at the start of the season was making his first appearance in the starting line-up.

'All working hard'
"Márcio Santos has given me a bit of headache," admitted Jaime Pacheco afterwards, "but it's the sort of headache that I like." Commenting on the absentees who included key players like Frechaut, Ricardo, Duda and Silva the coach said: "As you can see, we don't just have one team. All of the squad are important as they are all working hard and give everything they have. If we carry on with this spirit, everyone will have his opportunity in the first team."

Foot injury
Pedro Santos, withdrawn at half-time against Gil Vicente, has been ruled out of Wednesday's match because of a foot injury while Pedro Emanuel is a doubtful starter due to a knee problem. Against that Martelinho is back in full training after a two-month absence.

Fierce derby
Matchday Two was a frustrating night however for Dortmund who failed to break down a stubborn Liverpool FC side and were left with their second draw in two games. The weekend action saw them involved in a fierce local derby at the Westfalenstadion against fellow Champions League contenders Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The match did not live up to expectations, with Sammer's side creating a lot of chances and Leverkusen admitting that a 1-1 draw was a flattering result after a poor performance.

'I'm not happy'
Marcio Amoroso put Dortmund ahead after only seven minutes but substitute Dimitar Berbatov equalised near the end. "I'm not happy with this result," said Sammer afterwards. "My team was well organised and created scoring chances. But that is not much use if you refuse all invitations to score goals."

'More greedy'
The result leaves Dortmund in fourth place with 13 points, eight behind unbeaten leaders, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and captain Stefan Reuter has chosen the run-up to the game in Portugal to issue a rallying cry to his team. "We have to be more greedy, more disciplined and more aggressive" he said. "We can, and must, play better than we have been lately."

Six without win
The Ruhr Valley club, who topped the 1. Bundesliga standings early in the season, appear to be on the slide after going six competitive matches without a win. For Wednesday's game Sammer will be without wing-back Joerg Heinrich and strikers Giuseppe Reina and Otto Addo who are all sidelined with injuries. Brazilian striker Ewerthon, who joined from Corinthians last weekend and has been described by Dortmund officials as a unique talent, is not yet eligible to play in European competition.
