Bayern survive as trio advance

FC Bayern München live on while AC Milan, Manchester United FC and FC Barcelona have reached the second group stage.

FC Bayern München will have to win their remaining two games to stand a chance of avoiding elimination from the UEFA Champions League after losing 2-1 to AC Milan.

Inzaghi winner
Milan's victory at the San Siro, sealed by Filippo Inzaghi's eighth goal of the first group stage in the 64th minute, sees them advance from Group G. Michael Tarnat had earlier cancelled out Serginho's opener for the Italian side.

Lens fightback
RC Deportivo La Coruña could have joined Milan in the next phase had they not allowed RC Lens to fight back from a goal behind to win 3-1 at the Félix-Bollaert stadium. Roy Makaay scored in the first half for Depor before Adama Coulibaly, Daniel Moreira and Olivier Thomert revived Lens's campaign. Depor remain on six points, two clear of Lens and five ahead of Bayern with two matches remaining.

Barcelona advance
FC Barcelona also made it four wins out of four in Group H to qualify after Frank de Boer ended FC Lokomotiv Moskva's resistance at Camp Nou. Club Brugge KV are on course to claim second place in the section after second-half goals from Gert Verheyen and Bengt Sæternes secured a 3-1 success against fellow hopefuls Galatasaray SK.

Scholes seals passage
Manchester United FC booked their place in the second stage despite a fine comeback by Olympiakos Piraeus FC in Athens. Paul Scholes blasted the winning goal after Lampros Choutos and Predrag Djordjevic had cancelled out strikes from Laurent Blanc and Juan Sebastián Verón.

Leverkusen climb
Bayer 04 Leverkusen, finalists last season, move from the bottom of Group F to second place behind United after Juan's goal secured a 2-1 BayArena win against Maccabi Haifa FC.

Newcastle fight on
Newcastle United FC live to fight another day in Group E after Gianluigi Buffon failed to keep out a skidding Andy Griffin strike at St James' Park. Goals from Aleksandr Khatskevich and Valentin Belkevich moved FC Dynamo Kyiv level on points with Juve while dropping Feyenoord out of the qualifying positions.
