Milan legend extends career

Alessandro Costacurta has signed a one-year contract extension which keeps him at the club until 2004.

One of AC Milan's most decorated players, defender Alessandro Costacurta has signed a one-year contract extension which keeps at the club until 2004.

Glittering career
The former Italian international turns 37 in April but has opted against retiring at the end of this season. Currently in his 16th campaign with the Rossoneri, Costacurta has collected 18 major honours at the San Siro, including five championships, two UEFA Champions League crowns and three UEFA Super Cups.

Suspended from showpieces
Additionally, Costacurta has been capped 59 times by his country, appearing in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, as well as the finals of EURO 96™. Unfortunately, though, suspensions denied him an opportunity to feature in the finals of the World Cup and Champions League in 1994.

Knee injury
In 2001/02 a serious knee injury ended Costacurta's season early and forced him to consider retirement for the first time. He began this term on the substitutes' bench, and his since gone on to start ten Serie A matches and three in the Champions League as back-up to Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini.
