Vieri edges Inter in front

Christian Vieri's goal gave Internazionale FC victory over Valencia CF while FC Barcelona drew in Turin.

Christian Vieri's first-half goal gave Internazionale FC a 1-0 advantage to take to Spain for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Valencia CF, but a late equaliser from FC Barcelona in Turin prevented Juventus FC from making it an Italian double.

Montero shot
Juventus were on course to inflict a first Champions League defeat this season on Barcelona after Paolo Montero fired them in front on 16th minutes, the Uruguayan defender rifling a shot into the top corner after Barça goalkeeper Roberto Bonana had parried Alessandro Del Piero's effort.

Barça draw level
However, Javier Saviola equalised 12 minutes from time with a low shot which took a deflection off Montero on its way past Gianluigi Buffon. Substitute Marco Di Vaio could have won the game for Juve in added time but he shot wide when clean through on goal.

Vieri header
Some 130 kilometres to the east of Turin, Inter overcame Valencia at the San Siro through Vieri's second goal in Europe this season, a close-range header in the 14th minute after Hernán Crespo had flicked on Emre Belözoglu's cross.

Two sent off
The match was touched by controversy in the second half when Emre and David Albelda were both dismissed in the 57th minute after the Valencia player had fouled the Turkish international. The action will switch to Spain for the second legs which take place on 22 April.
