Mido makes Marseille move

Olympique de Marseille have announced that Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' will join the club.

Celta loan
"All the agreements have been made and the signing will be completed on Saturday afternoon in Cairo," said a Marseille statement released today.

Out of favour
The 20-year-old scored 12 goals in the 2001/02 season to help Ajax win the Eredivisie. However, he has been on loan at Spanish club RC Celta de Vigo since March after falling out with the Amsterdam club's hierarchy. He played eight matches for the Spaniards, scoring four goals.

'Great things'
Celta wanted to sign him permanently but could not pay the €10m asking price. However, it appears Marseille have captured him for around €6m, according to French media reports. "I know I will be playing at a club where I can achieve great things," Mido said.

'Powerful and busy'
"I hope to help him hit the heights at OM," said coach Alain Perrin. "He's powerful, busy in the box, versatile. He's the archetypal modern forward." Mido will link up with another Marseille signing, striker Didier Drogba, who joined the club from En Avant Guingamp last month. Marseille enter the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round.

Inter sale
Meanwhile, Ajax have also agreed to sell Dutch international winger Andy van der Meyde to Internazionale FC. Click here for full story.
