Kohler leaves Leverkusen

Jürgen Kohler has been released from his role of sport director at Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen will part company with sport director Jürgen Kohler on 1 July, ending an association that has lasted just 15 months.

Mutual consent
Former Germany Under-21 coach Kohler joined Bundesliga club Leverkusen on 31 March last year, but the deal that was due to run until 2008 was ended by mutual consent, the club said on Tuesday.

Playing honours
Kohler, who was considered one of the best defenders in the game during his playing days, won the 1990 FIFA World Cup with Germany, the UEFA Cup with Juventus FC three years later and the UEFA Champions League title with BV Borussia Dortmund in 1997.

Qualifying stage
However, Kohler failed to make his mark in his role at Leverkusen, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season and will start their European campaign next season in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.
