Further frustration for Nuñez

Spanish winger Antonio Núñez's wait for his Liverpool FC debut goes on after he underwent keyhole surgery.

Antonio Nuñez faces a longer wait for his Liverpool FC debut after undergoing knee surgery.

No improvement
The Spanish winger signed from Real Madrid CF in mid-August as part of the deal that took Michael Owen to the Santiago Bernabéu, but hours after being unveiled he damaged knee ligaments in training. He was initially ruled out for four weeks, but the 25-year-old's hopes of making an appearance in tonight's reserve match against Birmingham City FC have been dashed, after his condition failed to improve.

Keyhole surgery
Medical staff have now decided he needs keyhole surgery to establish the seriousness of the problem, and a clearer diagnosis will be made tomorrow. A Liverpool spokesman said today: "It is desperately disappointing for Antonio and the club. He will undergo keyhole surgery and we will know more later."

Gerrard injury
Liverpool, who won their opening UEFA Champions League Group A match at home to AS Monaco FC 2-0, visit Olympiacos CFP on Tuesday having already had captain Steven Gerrard ruled out for two months with a broken foot.
