Scholl shines for Magath

Felix Magath credited Mehmet Scholl with seizing the game as FC Bayern München beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC.

Felix Magath, Bayern coach
I am completely satisfied with today's performance. We wanted a decisive victory and we got one. At the start it was not easy for us and we were not able to get into the game. So I took off Bastian Schweinsteiger. He has had a long season, he also played [at UEFA EURO 2004™] in Portugal and is obviously tired. Fortunately substitute Mehmet Scholl took charge of the game, after which we scored the second and third goals. At the beginning of the second half we lost concentration for a little while, but Oliver Kahn made a few good saves. I am happy that Roy Makaay also scored twice. Now we can go to Amsterdam without any pressure. We have nothing to lose there, because our position in Group C is clear, but we do not want to give Ajax the points without a fight.

Nir Klinger, Maccabi coach
Our game plan did not change between the first and second half because we know we are not on the same level as Bayern and we will not be there, even in ten years' time. We had a few good moments and did our best. I am disappointed because of the result and I hope we can do better in the next game, especially in attack. The two goals just before the break, both from corners, crushed us. I am not angry with my players because they tried really hard and they are upset with the defeat. I am optimistic with the last game against Juventus [FC] still ahead of us and with something to play for. We hope to end the campaign in a dignified manner and might cause an upset. If we qualify for the UEFA Cup it would be a big story in Israel.

Roy Makaay, Bayern striker
We killed off the game by scoring an early goal and made sure we did not make any silly mistakes. Maccabi's goal put them back in the game but I'm glad we managed to ease the pressure.

John Panstil, Maccabi defender
During the game and after the match we argued in defence about the responsibility for the goals. This should not happen at a professional club.
