Injury ends Cissé's season

Group A
A goalless draw at home against Albacete Balompié on Sunday was hardly ideal preparation for RC Deportivo La Coruña's crucial encounter with Liverpool FC at the Riazor. Manuel Pablo García missed the game with a back complaint but Mauro Silva is expected to return from his thigh strain in time for Wednesday's game. Liverpool also shared the spoils, drawing 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers FC in a game overshadowed by a broken leg for Djibril Cissé who is out for the rest of the season. Olympiacos CFP welcome group leaders AS Monaco FC to Greece and warmed up with a 5-1 win against PAOK Thessaloniki, with Rivaldo twice on target. Argentinian centre-half Gabriel Schürrer was substituted at half-time to keep him fresh for the visit of Didier Deschamps' side, who drew 1-1 with Olympique de Marseille on Friday night.

Group B
FC Dynamo Kyiv stayed in touch with Ukrainian leaders FC Shakhtar Donetsk with a 2-0 away win against FC Metalurh Zaporizhya ahead of the visit of Real Madrid CF. The Spanish giants also triumphed 2-0, goals from Michael Owen and Ronaldo enough to defeat city rivals Getafe CF. Luís Figo missed the game with a throat infection but is expected to return on Wednesday, unlike Walter Samuel who is out with a knee injury, and David Beckham, still sidelined by damaged ribs. Francesco Totti could even afford to miss one of his two penalties as AS Roma strolled to a 5-1 win against Cagliari Calcio, substitute Vincenzo Montella also scoring twice as full time approached. Although Vincent Candela returned to the squad, fit-again Cristian Chivu will not be rushed into action against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who have injury woes of their own. Jermaine Jones is expected to be out for at least a month with a torn calf ligament suffered in the 1-0 defeat against BV Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Jacek Krzynowek is also a serious doubt for the trip to Rome after suffering a knee injury.

Group C
FC Bayern München will be without Zé Roberto for the visit of Juventus FC after the Brazilian midfield player suffered concussion in the 2-0 loss to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. Hasan Salihamidzic is also doubtful with a hip injury. Serie A leaders Juve eased to a 3-0 win against AC Chievo Verona and are likely to give Gianluca Pessotto a start on Wednesday in place of Gianluca Zambrotta, who pulled his hamstring in the victory against Roma in midweek. Alessandro Del Piero was rested against Chievo but is sure to return in Munich. Defeated at the weekend, Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC could be eliminated if they drop points against visiting AFC Ajax, who won for the first time in three Eredivisie matches thanks to Rafael van der Vaart's solitary goal against NEC Nijmegen. Czech midfield player Tomáš Galásek is still out with back problems and is not expected back before next weekend.

Group D
Olympique Lyonnais can look forward to Wednesday's game against Fenerbahçe SK after maintaining their Ligue 1 lead with a 1-0 home win over struggling RC Strasbourg. However, captain Claudio Caçapa seems doubtful for the remainder of the group-stage campaign after being carried off on a stretcher while Sylvain Wiltord also left the field with hamstring trouble. Fenerbahçe suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 2-1 against city rivals Besiktas JK. Márcio Nobre suffered a slight facial injury but will not miss the trip to France. Goals either side of half-time gave runaway Czech leaders AC Sparta Praha a 2-0 win against SK Sigma Olomouc. They travel to Old Trafford hoping Manchester United FC, for whom Ruud van Nistelrooij is not a certain starter, fail to recover from their 2-0 defeat away against Portsmouth FC.
