Bremen let Nery return home

Gustavo Nery has ended a seven-month spell at Werder Bremen with a loan move to SC Corinthians.

Gustavo Nery has ended an unhappy seven-month spell at Werder Bremen by returning to Brazil with SC Corinthians.

Buy-out clause
The defender will join the Brazilian side on loan until the summer, when they have the option to make the deal permanent for €1.5m. "We originally wanted to sell him," Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs said, "so this deal is a compromise. Still, we expect Corinthians to make use of their option to make the deal permanent in the next few weeks."

Three appearances
The 27-year-old Brazilian international joined the Bundesliga champions from FC Sao Paulo last summer, in a deal reportedly worth €600,000. But a series of injuries have limited him to just three league matches and he has failed to make an impact with the club.

Lyon loss
Bremen are on the verge of elimination from the UEFA Champions League following a 3-0 home defeat by Olympique Lyonnais last week. The return leg is in France on 8 March and unless the side register a dramatic turnaround, they will have to be content with defending their domestic title. They lie third in the Bundesliga.
