Capello shouting for joy

Fabio Capello hailed Juventus FC's "heart, determination and quality" after they saw off Real Madrid CF.

Marcelo Zalayeta sent Juventus FC through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with just four minutes of extra time remaining as nine-time winners Real Madrid CF were defeated 2-1 on aggregate. The Spanish side had been 15 minutes from advancing when David Trezeguet cancelled out the visitors' first-leg advantage with an acrobatic shot.

Fabio Capello, Juventus coach
Immediately after the final whistle, I ran inside the changing room and shouted as loud as I could because I was so happy after such a tense match. We didn't give them chances to score and I'm delighted with my players' performances. It was always going to be difficult to overcome the 1-0 defeat from the first leg but we played with heart, determination and quality. We didn't allow Madrid to play as they wanted. We were winning balls in midfield and immediately running towards the penalty box, making it difficult for them. I have no doubt we deserved to qualify.

Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Madrid coach
It's hard to accept a defeat like this. I've already spoken to my players and they are all extremely sad. Juve are very strong but we could have scored and qualified tonight. Now, however, we can only accept the result of the match, think about what we did wrong and focus on the domestic league. I was forced to take off [Zinedine] Zidane because he wasn't fully fit before the game. Because the match was so intense and tiring, it really took it out of him.

Gianluca Zambrotta, Juventus midfield player
We cannot be happier than this. We fully deserved to qualify, giving them a real footballing lesson. Ahead of the game, Madrid were talking as if qualification was a certainty, but tonight, Juve were the real galácticos.

David Beckham, Madrid midfield player
I don't know what made the difference today. We came here to win. But we knew it'd be difficult because Juve are very strong, especially at home. We are very, very disappointed.
