Le Guen's pride in lethal Lyon

Olympique Lyonnais coach Paul Le Guen believes his side can get better after overwhelming Werder Bremen.

Olympique Lyonnais reached the last eight of the UEFA Champions League in resounding fashion after a 7-2 win against Werder Bremen gave them a 10-2 aggregate success, the biggest ever aggregate win in the knockout stages of the competition proper. Sylvain Wiltord scored a hat-trick and Michael Essien two, with Florent Malouda and Jérémy Berthod also on target meaning Johan Micoud and Valérien Ismaël's strikes were little consolation for the visitors.

Paul Le Guen, Lyon coach
We have eliminated a very good side and I am really proud of my team. It is going to be very tough in the quarter-finals but I believe that we can do better than last season. We were in the last eight and won the French title in 2004 - now we are in the last eight again and chasing another French title. I only hope we are able to do better.

Florent Malouda, Lyon midfield player
We really enjoyed the match tonight and it was great fun. It showed that Lyon are now capable of doing great things in this competition. The players are getting along well and you can see it when they are on the pitch. We have learned a lot over the last few seasons. We were in the quarter-finals last year too and we hope that now we can go a little bit further, even though this result will mean nothing in the next round.

Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
It is unbelievably disappointing. One can always lose a match, especially when one plays three strikers, but to lose by so much is just not on. We were never there for the one-on-one challenges and always too far from the man with the ball. Lyon are definitely a good team but they will never again come across as easy an opponent as us. It's a really big disappointment. You can lose, but you cannot play that way; if you play without summoning up all your strength, you cannot expect to be successful.
