'This is not the football we want'

There was despair in Germany and delight in England while the scenes in Milan led the Italian press perspective.

FC Bayern München 3-2 Chelsea FC (agg: 5-6)
A last-minute win over Chelsea is not enough – with one goal ultimately proving the difference against Bayern. With their heads hanging down Ballack and co left the pitch in Munich's Olympiastadion. The dream is over. Bayern have to accept the fact they are not good enough yet for Europe's top class despite the football wonder they were hoping for following the 4-2 defeat in the first leg. (Express, Germany)

José Mourinho watched the game in a hotel and it was not called heartbreak. Comfort Inn would have made a suitable venue for the Chelsea manager as his team continued their march on the European Cup final with more to spare over Bayern Munich than the 6-5 aggregate suggested. Chelsea are through to the last four having overcome Barcelona, the Spanish league leaders, and the best team in Germany. (The Times, England)

FC Internazionale Milano 0-1 AC Milan (agg: 0-3)
Second leg abandoned after 75 minutes
Endless shame. It was a disgraceful episode for an otherwise civil town like Milan. This is not the football we want, this is not the show we want to watch. The game is now only a secondary matter. (Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy)

Milan qualified but this is not news considering the recent results between the two sides. It was a melancholic end to the second edition of the Milan derby in the Champions League and a very bad blow to the reputation of the town and of Italian football in general. (Corriere della Sera, Italy)
