Gilberto pledge lifts Gunners

Midfield player Gilberto has pledged his future to Arsenal FC by extending his contract with the UEFA Champions League hopefuls until 2009.

World Cup glory
The 28-year-old is the only player from the 2002 FIFA World Cup-winning squad left in the English Premiership, a league he joined shortly after featuring in all of Brazil's seven matches in Korea/Japan. The former Clube Atlético Mineiro star has played 120 league games for the Gunners, winning the title in 2004 either side of FA Cup final victories in Cardiff.

Fastest goal
"Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to enjoying Gilberto's continued contribution in the forthcoming seasons," said a club statement. The midfielder scored the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history, 20.07 seconds against PSV Eindhoven on 25 September 2002, and will hope for further success in the competition this season - starting at AFC Ajax on Tuesday.
