Ronaldinho collects players' prize

FC Barcelona talisman Ronaldinho has been elected the first FIFPro World Player of the Year after a poll of 38,000 professional players in 40 countries.

'Great honour'
Members of the players' world association also voted in a secret ballot to choose the 2004/05 season's best team from a short list of 55 top names. "It's a great honour to receive another one of these big prizes and this one is extra special because it's voted for by my fellow players," said Ronaldinho.

First ballot
FIFPro president Gordon Taylor said: "To be recognised by your fellow professionals from across the world is a unique honour. While we respect the many other football awards that are handed out, I think it is special to see these results, the very first ballot among the world's players."

Milan marvels
AC Milan had the best representation in the World XI, with five of the Italian club's players involved, while English champions Chelsea FC had a trio of stars featured. "To be involved with such illustrious names is a sign of our achievements," said Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

Young stars
FIFPro, who announced the awards at a ceremony in London, said Manchester United FC had provided two winners of young player accolades. England striker Wayne Rooney was selected by its awards committee and Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo voted by fans worldwide.

UEFA partnership
Last month, UEFA and FIFPro signed a Memorandum of Understanding which recognises their respective roles and positions within European professional football. The continental governing body said the accord "will create the foundation for a relationship between UEFA and FIFPro and allow them to further discuss several aspects of professional football in Europe to the benefit of the whole football family."
