Fernández out as Betis woes mount

Real Betis Balompié defender Luis Fernández will miss the Spanish club's opening two UEFA Champions League Group G games with a hamstring injury.

Double whammy
The 33-year-old left-back injured his right leg in Saturday’s 1-0 Primera División win against CA Osasuna and faces a three-week lay-off. This will rule Fernández out of Betis's Champions League group-stage debut at home to Liverpool FC on Tuesday as well as the trip to RSC Anderlecht on 28 September.

The Andalusian team suffered a further blow with Brazilian forward Edu spraining a ligament in his left knee during the Osasuna game. He will be out for ten days and definitely sits out the Liverpool match, along with the suspended Alberto Rivera. The worry for coach Llorenç Serra Ferrer is that Spain winger Joaquín Sánchez could yet join them on the sidelines against the European champions. The 24-year-old is struggling with a strained right knee.
