Article body
Dennis Bergkamp came to Arsenal's rescue with a winning goal deep in added time to deny FC Thun a memorable opening to their debut UEFA Champions League campaign. The Swiss side were just seconds away from claiming a precious Group B point after Nelson Ferreira had cancelled out Gilberto's opener for Arsenal, who had seen Robin van Persie given a straight red card before the break.
Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager
I feel we got what we wanted. It was not easy because we were playing against a team who defended well. They played very deep - even with eleven men against ten they stayed at the back. I couldn't understand why they didn't attack more and I think they missed an opportunity to cause an upset. When we scored, they scored straight away. It was a good test of character - the sending off made it difficult, but if it had finished 1-1, I would not have been thinking that our chances of qualifying had diminished. The result was very important for the team, though. I was delighted with Bergkamp. His performance was full of fight, determination and class.
Urs Schönenberger, Thun coach
I'm very pleased we held Arsenal for so long and gave them a good game. It is always going to be difficult when you play a top European side like them. We played very well in the first half, but with two defensive mistakes they took the lead. I don't think we missed an opportunity to win it - Arsenal have better individual players and if we had attacked more it could have created more space for them. It was a good defensive performance generally. I hope we can take this defeat well. I believe we deserved to earn a point. Maybe we weren't clever enough.
Ljubo Milicevic, Thun defender
It is a great stadium and it has been a fantastic experience to play here. We did well as a team but it counts for nothing if you lose.
