Alcides makes PSV loan move

After ending his stay at SL Benfica the Chelsea FC-owned defender Alcides has joined PSV Eindhoven in another long-term loan, this time for 18 months.

'Good move'
The 21-year-old will join the PSV squad at their training camp in Spain tomorrow after passing a medical and sealing an 18-month loan move today. Alcides is owned by Chelsea but had been playing in Portugal for SL Benfica. "I am glad to be here. This is a highly rated club and a good move for me," said Alcides, who will need no introduction to the PSV coach, Ronald Koeman.

Brazilian contingent
The Brazilian played under Koeman at Benfica last season, operating at both centre-back and right-back under the Dutchman who reportedly described Alcides as the fastest defender he has worked with. With Alcides' arrival, PSV now have five Brazilians in their squad – goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, defender Alex, forward Diego Tardelli and Jonathan Reis, their new teenage striker, are the other four.

Ineligible for Europe
"I've played together with Alex and I also know the other guys," said Alcides, who was a team-mate of Alex's at Santos FC in 2004. A product of the Salvador club EC Vitória, he had a short loan spell with FC Schalke 04 in Germany in 2003/04 before returning to Europe in 2004/05 to play for Benfica. Alcides' three appearances for Benfica in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage mean he will not be eligible to play in the same competition for PSV, who face Arsenal FC in the first knockout round next month.
