Mareque excited by Porto switch

FC Porto have strengthened their defensive options by signing Argentinian left-back Lucas Mareque from CA River Plate on a three-and-a-half year deal.

FC Porto have signed Argentinian left-back Lucas Mareque ahead of their UEFA Champions League first knockout round tie with Chelsea FC.

Argentinian contingent
The 23-year-old former youth international joins from CA River Plate on a contract until 2010, and will link up with compatriots Lucho González and Lisandro López at his new club. Eligible to be one of up to three players added to Porto's UEFA Champions League squad at the end of this month, he will compete with Marek Čech for a place in the starting lineup.

'Important step'
Mareque told Porto's official website: "This is the most important step in my career. I am aware of the greatness of Porto and of their importance in the sporting world. They are a club who always play to win. I will give everything for the club and I hope everything goes well in order for the team to achieve success." Porto welcome Chelsea - and former coach José Mourinho - to Portugal on 21 February, with the return on 6 March.
