Rosenborg BK coach Knut Tørum admitted third place and a UEFA Cup berth was now the extent of his side's ambitions following the 2-0 home defeat by FC Schalke 04. Opposite number Mirko Slomka, meanwhile, was delighted with the victory but feels Chelsea FC's triumph at Valencia CF has thrown UEFA Champions League Group B wide open.

Knut Tørum, Rosenborg coach
I think we played a decent first half. The structure of the team was good and the players showed a lot of will but unfortunately, we didn't take our chances. I told the players to be patient, that the opportunities would eventually come. We were hoping that Schalke would be content with a point in the second half but then we just fell asleep on two occasions and Schalke got their goals. We are in the same group as three very good teams and if we are to succeed, we must learn to take the chances we get. We must be more precise, because the pace is high all the time against teams like Schalke. After today's match, our possibilities in the group are much slimmer but we can still take some points and we hope to get third place.

Mirko Slomka, Schalke coach
I was very pleased with how we secured our victory in the second half. In the first half Rosenborg had a few counterattacks, so I told the players to stay deeper in the second half. We played well overall, tactically. You can never be sure but I didn't feel we were under much threat. I'm happy we were able to secure three points today. The other result was not the best, but we will play twice against Chelsea and we have every possibility. We wanted to win, we had to win, and I'm very glad we were able to do so. Rosenborg have great potential as they have a lot of strength on the counterattack, and they can still create problems for the other teams in the group.
