Vela lengthens Arsenal contract

Arsenal FC forward Carlos Vela is the latest player to sign a new long-term contract at the club, with manager Arsène Wenger adamant there is "still a huge amount to come" from the Mexican international.

'Fantastic talent'
Vela follows Alex Song and Eduardo, both of whom have agreed new deals in the last month, in making the commitment as Wenger looks to keep together a youthful squad that has shown great promise. The 20-year-old, who made his Gunners debut in August 2008, appeared in four of Arsenal's six UEFA Champions League Group H games, helping them top the section. "Carlos is a fantastic talent," said Wenger. "He is still only 20 years old, so there is still a huge amount to come from this boy. He is a very exciting player. We're looking forward to seeing Carlos score many goals in an Arsenal shirt for a long time to come."

Loan spells
Vela moved to north London in January 2007 but subsequently spent 18 months on loan with Spanish sides RC Celta de Vigo, UD Salamanca and CA Osasuna. "I just want to work hard and help this great club win trophies," he said. "I want to stay here for a long time and it's a great responsibility. I will keep working hard to show the boss and all the fans why I'm here." Nicklas Bendtner, Denilson, Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott have also signed improved terms since the end of last season.
