There were starkly contrasting viewpoints from the benches after FC Bayern München beat AS Roma 2-0 in Group E, but Louis van Gaal and Claudio Ranieri were united in praise for the "remarkable effort" from Thomas Müller 11 minutes from time that finally broke the deadlock.

Louis van Gaal, Bayern coach
Under the circumstances we played very well. We passed the ball around nicely but didn't create many chances. We did not give much away against a very good team, but they just sat back and defended and that always makes it difficult. All the ball chasing eventually took its toll and after 70 minutes Roma ran out of legs. From then on it was our game.

The fans have to understand that we need time to break down teams with ten men behind the ball, and that's what we did. Roma only got over the halfway line five times – that always makes it difficult. But we scored two nice goals and we should have had two more in the last five minutes. In these circumstances normally we have to be creative but we are without [Arjen] Robben and [Franck] Ribéry, so a win is fantastic.

Claudio Ranieri, Roma coach
It's not a good start for us, but I'm satisfied with how we played. The result does not reflect what happened: we created a lot of chances and missed all of them. Conversely Bayern were clinical up front. We did everything right in the first half and Marco Borriello was a threat, but in the second they cranked up the pressure and had two or three dangerous attacks.

They finally broke the deadlock with a remarkable effort from Müller – he is an unbelievable player. It's a shame as we were playing very well, but Bayern fired in a couple of shots from long range. Despite the loss I have to say that Roma are still alive and kicking.
