AC Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini has been ruled out of the UEFA Champions League group stage after undergoing cruciate ligament surgery on his right knee.

The 27-year-old former Olympique de Marseille and Arsenal FC player suffered the injury in a friendly game against Juventus earlier this month. Several doctors assessed the problem to check for the possibility of avoiding an operation but the French international finally opted to go under the knife, meaning he will spend five to six months on the sidelines.

The Rossoneri kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 13 September, and will also face FC BATE Borisov and FC Viktoria Plzeň in Group H.
