FC Barcelona defender Éric Abidal has ended speculation surrounding his immediate future by signing a one-year contract extension running until 30 June 2013.

The deal for the French international also includes automatic renewal clauses that potentially could extend his Camp Nou stay until the summer of 2015. The 32-year-old former AS Monaco FC left-back joined Barcelona from Olympique Lyonnais in 2007 and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy for a second time at Wembley last May having recovered from surgery to remove a liver tumour. He has also won three Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, two FIFA Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three Spanish Super Cups with the Azulgrana.

Josep Guardiola's side visit Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on 14 February with the return leg following on 7 March, but first on Wednesday is their Copa del Rey quarter-final opener at the team five points clear of them in the Liga, Real Madrid CF.
