Germany punish Portugal, Neymar ends drought

Germany will be Europe's sole representatives in the semi-finals of the Men's Olympic Football Tournament after beating Portugal to set up a last-four meeting with Nigeria, while Barcelona ace Neymar helped hosts Brazil get the better of Colombia.

Germany lost 5-0 to Portugal in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last year, but they earned sweet revenge in Brasilia thanks to a well-deserved win. Serge Gnabry broke the deadlock, producing a cool finish moments before half-time to take his Olympic tally to six goals in four games, before Matthias Ginter, Davie Selke and Philipp Max also struck.

"We stuck together as a team, our system worked very well against Portugal and I think we deserved to win," said Arsenal forward Gnabry afterwards. "Our goal is obviously to win the whole tournament. We came here with this goal and hopefully we can carry on in the next game."

That will come against Nigeria after the African heavyweights downed Denmark 2-0, Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel finding the net before Aminu Umar sealed the result. Also through to the last four are hosts Brazil, who beat Colombia by the same scoreline as Neymar buried a free-kick for his first Olympic goal in 501 minutes ahead of a late strike from Luan.

They will now tackle Honduras, through to their maiden Olympic semi-final following a 1-0 victory against South Korea courtesy of an Alberth Elis effort.
