Swelling around knee
Petit has not played since the home league win against Aston Villa FC on 27 September because of swelling around the knee. He returned to training recently only for the problem to flare up again.
'About six weeks'
The exploratory surgery will reveal the extent of the problem but Petit himself expects to be absent for over a month, meaning he could miss the remainder of the UEFA Champions League group stage. "I'll need about six weeks before I can return to playing," he told French newspaper L'Equipe.
