Rangers complete double swoop

Rangers FC have boosted their defensive options by signing Henning Berg and Paolo Vanoli on free transfers.

League opener
Berg, who is 35 next month, has penned a one-year contract after being released by English club Blackburn Rovers FC in May. Meanwhile, former Parma AC, AC Fiorentina and Bologna FC full-back Vanoli has agreed a two-year deal. The 30-year-old had faced Rangers in a UEFA Champions League qualifier in 1999 and manager Alex McLeish said he had been tracking him since the early days of last season.

'Fresh challenge'
"We are delighted to reach an agreement with Paolo and I know Alex is looking forward to working with him," Rangers director Martin Bain told the Glasgow club's website. Rangers launch their 2003/04 European campaign in the Champions League third qualifying round against either FC København of Denmark or Malta's Sliema Wanderers FC.
